You Need To Know- Permit to Purchase
Permit to purchase a handgun in Delaware passed the Senate as amended in the House. Read our previous update for a run down of those amendments.
As Republican members of our Senate introduced over 10 amendments this past Thursday in efforts to protect you from unlawful search and seizure, being subjected to a registry, undefined and broad red flag laws, and long wait periods of up to or more than 30 days for permit approval… Senate Democrats declared every amendment as “unfriendly.”
Senators Pettyjohn, Buckson, Hocker, Lawson, and Richardson led the charge, attempting to reach across the aisle for a solution to the absolute horrors of this legislation, but their pleas for compromise fell on deaf ears as Democrat Senators took turns reading a script from a piece of paper that declared each and every amendment as an attempt to delay the inevitable passing of SS 1 for SB 2 with House Amendments 2, 6, 10, and 11.
All that seemed to matter to Senator Lockman and her posse of Progressives was, “We’ve worked on this for 5 years, it’s time to send this to the Governor for signing.”
It CLEARLY did not matter that the bill was an outright prohibition for hundreds of thousands of low income families and individuals, single parents, seniors, and victims already fleeing violence.
As written and passed, a woman fleeing active violence could have a team of Delaware State Police Troopers show up at her door, confiscate all her firearms, and leave her completely defenseless, simply based on one single false report made by her own abuser.
While red flag laws are being deemed unconstitutional all over the nation, permit to purchase is an extremely broad and vague red flag law within itself that’s being implemented with no regard to constitutionality.
Hold onto your braziers! It’s going to be a bumpy ride!
In the mean time, this bill will take up to 18 months to actually go into play. That is, IF they get past the injunction and lawsuit that the Delaware State Sportsmen’s Association will file the minute permit to purchase is signed into law. Please donate to their lawsuit fund HERE.
Until permit to purchase is implemented, it’s business as usual. If you have any questions about the lawful purchase of a firearm, reach out to us!
